Ginger ale, grenadine & maraschino cherry — Hollywood's original mocktail
The Shirley Temple is probably the world's most famous mocktail. Created (allegedly) by a Chasen's bartender in Beverly Hills for the famous child star, it became the defining non-alcoholic bar order for generations of Americans. Simple, sweet, and immediately recognizable by its pink colour and maraschino cherry.
Homemade grenadine (pomegranate juice reduced with sugar) is dramatically better than the commercial fluorescent red version. For a more adult Shirley Temple, add a squeeze of lime and use ginger beer instead of ginger ale. The Dirty Shirley (with vodka) is the adult transition drink — but the original needs none.
