🫐 Blackberry Bourbon Smash

Muddled blackberries, bourbon, mint, and lemon — deep purple and completely addictive.

Serves 1
Shaken
Bourbon cocktail
  • 2 oz bourbon (wheated works best — Maker's Mark, Larceny)
  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • 5–6 fresh blackberries (plus 2 for garnish)
  • 6 fresh mint leaves (plus a sprig for garnish)
  • Ice

  1. 1
Muddle berries and mintAdd blackberries and mint leaves to a shaker. Muddle firmly — you want the blackberries fully crushed to release their juice and the mint oils released. Don't over-muddle the mint or it goes bitter.
  2. 2
Add liquid and iceAdd bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Fill with ice.
  3. 3
Shake hardShake hard for 15 seconds. The blackberry pulp needs to distribute fully through the drink.
  4. 4
Double strainStrain through a cocktail strainer and then through a fine-mesh strainer into a rocks glass over fresh ice. This removes the blackberry seeds and mint pulp.
  5. 5
GarnishPlace 2 fresh blackberries and a fresh mint sprig on top. The colour should be deep purple with a slight pink foam on top from the berry juice.

Wheated vs High-Rye Bourbon

Wheated bourbons (Maker's Mark, Larceny, Weller) use wheat as the secondary grain instead of rye. They're softer, rounder, and sweeter — and that sweetness is exactly what plays well against the tart blackberries and lemon juice.

High-rye bourbons (Four Roses, Bulleit, Wild Turkey 101) are spicier and more aggressive. They work, but the spice competes with the berry rather than complementing it. If you only have a high-rye on hand, reduce the lemon juice slightly to soften the tartness.

🍓 Strawberry Bourbon Smash

Replace blackberries with strawberries. Sweeter and less tart — you may want to reduce the simple syrup by ¼ oz.

🫐 Blueberry Bourbon Smash

Use blueberries instead of blackberries. Milder flavour, beautiful deep blue-purple colour.

🌶️ Spicy Blackberry Smash

Add 2 slices of jalapeño to the muddling step alongside the blackberries and mint. The berry-heat combination is genuinely excellent.

🥃 Blackberry Rye Smash

Use rye whiskey instead of bourbon. The rye spice against the blackberry tartness creates a drier, more complex drink.
