About This Cocktail

Turmeric (haldi) is the spice that colours most Indian curries yellow and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 4,000 years for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its use in cocktails has grown as the 'wellness' cocktail trend (drinks with functional ingredients) has intersected with Indian food culture. Both Saffron Milwaukee and Samudhra NJ independently landed on the same combination: honey's floral sweetness + turmeric's earthy, slightly bitter warmth + vodka's neutrality + lemon's acidity. Simple, direct, and genuinely delicious.

Variations

Turmeric Whisky SourReplace vodka with bourbon — the vanilla-caramel of bourbon with honey-turmeric creates a remarkable warming sour
Gin Turmeric MartiniReplace vodka with gin — especially good with a lemon-forward gin (Tanqueray 10, Portobello Road)
Golden SpritzPour over ice in a wine glass, top with Prosecco — a golden aperitivo spritz

The black pepper is a hidden essential: piperine (the compound in black pepper) dramatically increases turmeric's bioavailability and also adds a faint warmth that deepens the drink's complexity. The honey-turmeric syrup can also be used in mocktails, hot drinks (as a ginger tea add-in), or as a salad dressing base. For a golden shimmer effect, add a pinch of edible gold luster dust to the shaker — the drink sparkles when poured.
