Vodka, fresh orange juice, and Galliano floated on top — the 1970s icon that transcends its era.
The Harvey Wallbanger was created in 1952 by bartender Donato 'Duke' Antone at Pancho's Bar in Hollywood. It was named after Harvey, a surfer who liked his Screwdrivers with a Galliano float. The drink went global in the 1970s through an aggressive Galliano marketing campaign featuring a cartoon of Harvey carrying a bottle.
The float technique transforms a simple Screwdriver into something more interesting. Galliano L'Autentico is a herbal-vanilla liqueur made with over 30 herbs and spices — its vanilla and anise notes hit the nose before the orange juice, creating a more layered drinking experience. Without Galliano, it's a Screwdriver; with it, it's a Harvey Wallbanger.
Replace vodka with tequila. Same technique — a Tequila Sunrise with a Galliano float instead of grenadine. Named for the comic strip character.
Reduce vodka to 1 oz, add Galliano to the build, and top with 2 oz Prosecco instead of all OJ. Lighter and bubbly.
Use blood orange juice instead of regular OJ and add a pinch of salt. The blood orange's tartness better complements the Galliano sweetness.
